ANALYSIS x

In this video project our brief was to film and edit two adverts which had to conform to a type of film genre or a classic film. One had to be filmed in the TV studio and the other outside of it. Our adverts were from two films - Sex & The City and The Ring.
The first advert filmed was S&TC, we filmed it outside the TV studio in the staff room. I think this conformed to the brief but we strayed away from the story board and I think this made our advert slightly messier than it should have been. The second advert filmed was The Ring. This was filmed in the TV studio and as it was our second time filming we were more prepared, I think this also conformed to the brief although we could have used more camera angles.

I don't think we payed much attention to mise-en-scene, although we payed attention to lighting and mood I think we should have used more to make our adverts more effective and professional.
I also feel we could have used a bigger variety of camera shots as in the S&TC advert most of the shots were close ups, and The Ring was quite the same. I think if we had another go at filming and put different shots and angles in then the adverts would be much better.

Overall our adverts came out well and conformed to the briefs but I think there is room for improvement.

EDITING & SHOOTING x

S&TC - SHOOTING
I think the shooting part of our Sex & The City advert went well. We managed to get all our material needed but there was a lot of extra filming we didn't need. I feel we stuck to our storyboard but also added bits and pieces into it which adds to the advert. My role was filming, I don't feel I did enough filming as I would have liked to in this advert but I think the parts I did film came out well and were used in the final outcome. Next time I think more planning should go into the advert before hand.
S&TC - EDITING
The editing of my Sex & The City advert didn't go well. I feel I should have done more at the beginning of the project because as we got closer to the deadline I felt I was having to rush the final outcome. I was placed into my own group with Josie which didn't work well as we both get distracted easily, but I think being put into a smaller group was also a good thing as I learned how to use most things in Final Cut Pro and this is very useful. The editing process also took quite long as we had the extra filming to get rid of but after I got used to the different parts of FCP it became much easier. I think the advert could be improved by adding a music bed, but I am pleased with the fact we managed to achieve the sort of advert we wanted although if I put more effort into it it could have been alot better and this is something I regret.

THE RING - SHOOTING
The shooting of The Ring advert went much better than the S&TC. We didn't have any unneeded footage and managed to get the whole process over and done with quickly. I think this was partly because it was better planned than the S&TC advert and we knew the shots we needed. I didn't take part in the shooting of this advert but I helped with the people that were filming giving them advice. I think we could have filmed a bigger variety of camera shots so we could choose between them but overall the shooting of this advert was good.

FINAL CUT PRO
I learned quite alot in Final Cut Pro as we only needed to share the editing between 2 people. The first thing I learned was to mark in and out and I got the hang of it quite easily. More challenging parts of were to add things like text and transitions, and the thing that took me longest to get right was logging and capturing!

Evaluation? Editing, Final Cut Pro.

1. I think the shooting of The sex and the city advert didn't go very well at all . In that advert shooting my role , was 'acting' as a character in the advert, which isn't a very major part, but i tried to make sure that it might at least come out close to what our whole idea was. This adverts shooting didn't go so well , as we didn't stick to the story board as planned. We had quite a lot irrelevant video ; we realised this when we had put this into final cut pro. So we was kind of disappointed as it meant we didn't really have enough quality footage to work with for our end product. But the good parts of the video is really good though, so we did manage to take those bits out and attempted to make it look better. Next time i think we should definitely stick to the storyboard.

The shooting of The ring spoof advert went quite allot better , because we went in knowing exactly what we wanted. Although , we didn't really re-do things so some parts could have been done to make the advert flow a bit better as it is a bit snappy. In this advert i filmed along side Courtnie, it was kind of easier just having the 2 of us filming because we both had the same kind of idea in our heads of how we wanted it to be so there wasn't any conflict as to how to film etc.Next time i think we should definitely try other angles and shots just so that we could compare on final cut .. in case we decided to change our mind at the last minute.

2. The sex and city editing was quite chalenging , because we had a lot of 'outtakes' to cut out from the video, so marking in and out was quite hard, because sometimes there was random laughter etc. But other then that we didnt really have much problems , as i was new to final cut pro i thought i might struggle to pick up what to do , because it looks quite complex, but i found it alot easier then i thought. We tried to add in a few transitions in between shots , it worked well for some parts, but other parts it didnt look so well ... Alot of scenes ended up being cut from our advert, and we had to film new parts to replace them . We made a 'product shot' type image with the product name and tag line on photoshop then we imported it into final cut pro making sure that it was in between the guidelines because if it werent then if our advert were to be shown on a smaller tv it would get cut off. It can definatly be inproved by changing the music we used as a music bed.

The Ring 'Spoof' editing seemed to be alot easier because we had less shots that we didnt want, so we didnt really have much to cut. Instead of having a picture that we had made on photoshop imported on as a image to show the product name and tag line , we had filmed a fuzzy screen and added writing over the top so it looked qute scary. We deleted all the audio from the video for this advert, the only audio is when grace(the ring) says ' classic' . We also made the whole advert black and white, and added a filter onto it to make it look like a old film. If it didnt have the background music it would almost look like a old charlie chaplin movie, But we added some creepy music to play underneath so it seems scarier. This advert could be improved if we had shot more differen angles, and so that we could have kept the original audio so it flowed better.

In Final Cut Pro one of the first things i learnt to do was how to 'Log and Capture' ; this is when you record in which parts of footage you want through the VT. Then i learnt how to 'Mark In' & 'Mark Out' ; when you pick what part you want from the footage that youve put on the programme. I sometime found this kinda hard because sometimes i didnt get it quite accurate enough , so i had to do it over again til i got it just as i wanted it. I learnt how to add in transitions , and how to lengthen or make them shorter. I also learnt how to add filters, which make the video another color etc, and to give the video a certain look. I learnt how to add text to the film , like a title or captions etc. I also know how just deleted the audio seperatly from the video. I learnt quite a lot about the programme.

Analysis

Looking at both the adverts , I think that both adverts conform to the brief quite well . But especially, the sex and the city one , although the music we used on it isn't really appropriate as it sounds like a rude film. But the length of the sex and the city one is a standard length , and it is almost like the film , with having the four characters, and being in the type of location that they would be in. It would have been better if the music was different and if we had better camera shots , as when filming we didn't stick to the story board. The ring spoof, started off conforming to the film genre brief quite well , but after finishing it  is more like a 'classic' horror film , rather than the ring. Although it isn't much like the ring as i had hoped , it is still like a movie ... a 'classic' horror film , just maybe not a specific one.

Sex & The City Movie - The sex and the city didn't really go as well as i had hoped seeing as we didn't follow the storyboard when we was filming, so we didn't get the right camera shots and angles that we wanted. We tried to set the room up as a cafe quite well , so that it might look like a sophisticated cafe that the girls in sex and the city might sit in .We had different outfits for each specific character to wear so , for example Carrie looked very classy etc. We attempted to get classy chic music to be playing underneath the whole advert , we thought it sounded o.k at first but after putting it together with the advert we realized that it maybe wasn't right for our advert and the concept of it. We did have to change some of the sound on certain parts of the advert though , like when we had the voiceover of the tag line and product name over a product shot.

The Ring Spoof Movie - The ring spoof advert did go really well compared to the sex and the city one. The music which we put over this advert worked really well in making it seem scary, we deleted all the audio from the actual video and just had the music playing all through out the advert . the only speech in the advert is when ' the ring' ; grace, says 'coke classic' (the name of the product) . At the end i particularly like when it has the name of the product and tag line on a fuzzy screen. We got quite good camera shots, for example t really looks like grace is coming out of the t.v , when everyone knows it is physically impossible  we make it look like she is coming out of the t.v . The length of this advert, is only 20 seconds though so it is quite short. But overall i much prefer the ring advert as i think it came out a lot better.
